












The Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG) hosts an annual fundraising event called “Art and Soul” to raise money for art education and implementation.
Every year the fundraising committee comes up with a new theme to attract Winnipeg’s young professional market. This year’s theme was New York Uncorked. The design needed to set the tone for an evening to remember.
One of the main issues to take into consideration was the ability this piece has to stir the interest in possible attendees. With this in mind the piece has to be visually very appealing.
We decided the best approach would be illustrative, and chose to use a freehand illustrative style merged with an air-brushed digital application.
Not wanting to distract from the impact of the illustration, we kept the design layout minimal. The use of bright oranges and yellows were complimented by metallic silver. The bold, funky look was applied to an oversized invitation, handbill, poster and ticket.
The illustration highlighted all the great contemporary aspects of New York from the mainstays of the street burger and hotdog vendor to the recent phenomenon of ‘Sex In The City’ and Donald Trump.

The impact of the communications pieces was overwhelming, contributing to the WAG’s highest grossing event of $60,000.
