Problem

Wasabi approached Velocity to design a new menu for its new lounge, Wasabi Next Door. We quickly realized they needed much more than a menu - a complete brand development was in order.

Our first challenge was to design a new logo for Wasabi Next Door. Wasabi owns Wasabi Next Door, Wasabi on Broadway, Wasabi Sushi Bistro and Wasabi at Home. We suggested that the original Wasabi wordmark stay untouched due to the brand visibility the restaurant has built since opening its original restaurant.

Solution

We left the Wasabi hand brushed wordmark and added four distinctive logos, differentiating the businesses but maintaining the consistency of the Wasabi wordmark. The logos are cohesive and professional without looking like two logos awkwardly put together.

We suggested developing a sign for Wasabi Next Door. We then designed the windows, both of the menus for Wasabi Next Door and the illustrations inside. We wanted the menus to be unique, so we created a modern version of the chopstick by sourcing clear plexi glass rods and frosted plastic covers. We used screws and plexi for the Wasabi Next Door late night menu. The result is modern and unique. We took great care to ensure the menus and illustrations were consistent with the design of the lounge which is white and clean with accents of orange and lime green throughout.

Results

Velocity designed, illustrated and wrote the copy for a discount card, an invitation for the grand opening party as well as a banner to advertise the lounge’s grand opening the following week. As a final touch, we designed custom t-shirts for the servers. Velocity also did all of the product sourcing and supplier coordination.

We completed this campaign from the first meeting to final production in two and a half months.
